If you’re coming here from Macupdate.com, expecting to get 2.0b2 working on anything less than 10.6, you will probably be disappointed. They updated the listing without asking me, removing 1.1b5 and replacing it with 2.0b2, which isn’t ready for prime time yet.
My goal is to get it working with 10.5 at least, but initial reports indicate that doesn’t work yet.
You can still access 1.1b5 or the Universal Binary (which is the better option) from the links on the right.
UPDATE: It’s not just Macupdate.com. It looks like everything got updated. Must be one automated script that just notified everything else. Oh well, I guess it’s open season!
Hello,
this is a very cool program. We are just beginning to use it for sending SMB-Links with Mac Mail. Since 10.6 Mac Mail and Finder are able to understand Windows like links such as:
\\server\path\on\server
This is good for us, because in our company there are Mac AND Windows machines.
With your tool, we can simply copy links to folders on our SMB-Server, just like Windows user can. one little thing would be very great: An option in the pref pane, where we can define a regular expression or something like this to replace some text in the path, which will be copied to clipboard.
An example (Delimiter String is “\”, Prefix is “\\server”):
I snag a Windows path and the result is: \\server\Volumes\path\on\server
If we could replace “Volumes\” with “” (nothing) the link would be ready to use. At the moment the user has to delete the String “Volumes\” manually.
Just an idea :)!
Markus
Thanks, Markus. RegEx support is in the pipeline already. I’m hoping to have it baked in to 2.0b3.
thanks so much! i’ve been feeling like my right arm was amputated without Path Snagger ever since I went Snow Leopard.
Hi,
I’m having problems running PathSnagger 2.0b2 under 10.6.4 on my MacBook Pro (first gen — Intel Core Duo).
It’s the first time I try to use the software; I’ve installed the preference pane and copied the service to ~/Library/Services
I see the new contextual-menu items (Snap Path Unix, etc.) but if I try selecting any of them, I get the following error in the Finder:
—
The “Snag Path Windows†service could not be used because the “PathSnaggerServiceBundle†application is not compatible with your computer.
Contact the vendor of “PathSnaggerServiceBundle†for an updated version.
—
Also, the “PathSnaggerServiceBundle.service” application has an icon with a strike through… Did I download the PowerPC binary by mistake?! 😉
Thanks! Can’t wait to use your software.
Thanks for this software. It’s amazing. I can’t imagine how we lived without it.
Everything was working fine until a few weeks ago, when it started disappearing from our machines. It’s still in the preference pane, but no longer shows up in the contextual menu. We re-installed, it showed up and then disappeared again in a couple days.
OS 10.6.5
@Geoff, is the actual bundle file missing? Check the “Services” submenu of the contextual menu. Once you have a certain number of services, 10.6 will automatically shove them all into the Services submenu.
Not sure what the bundle file is. But there is no “Services” submenu at all. Right now there is only one, sometimes two, services showing up (ClamXav and Folder Actions).
We want to generate hyperlink paths to folders on our Apple file server.
We can create these semi-manually by choosing “Snag Path File” to a folder on a mounted file server volume. If we then manually replace the prefix “file://” with “afp://” and replace “localhost/Volumes” with the server IP address or domain name, we get a hyperlink that works.
We can them email them around the office and clicking on the hyperlink mounts the server volume (if not already mounted) and opens the folder in the Finder.
It would be great if we could automate this by editing preferences.
A slightly less useful route would be just swapping “file://” for “afp://” then stripping out “localhost/”. This would create hyperlinks that work as long as the server volume is already mounted.
Did the latest update berak something? It was working fine even with 10.6.8. now there is no services menu.
This sounds like just what I need, but as far as I can see it’s doing nothing on my dual-core intel mac running OS 10.6.6.
I’ve installed the prefpane. I’ve made inferences from the posts here that the .service file needs to be copied to a “Services” directory, and done that too (/System/Library/Services). I’ve double-clicked on the service file once it’s there. I’ve opened the prefpane. I’ve tried to follow the FAQ that says you should click “Enable Unix Paths” but that option and its siblings do not appear: instead there’s a text box for “delimiter” so I entered a forward-slash there, hoping that that will be interpreted as “enable unix paths”. I’ve relaunched the Finder. Nothing new appears in the context menu, either under Services or at the top level. I’ve lathered, rinsed and repeated with or without being “Finder friendly”. Is there anything else I should be doing?
I’ve always wondered… why does this have to have a Preference Pane? Can’t it just run as a service and nothing more?
I really love this and it works great, but never understood what the pref pane business is about.
@Cow, it has a pref pane because no one is satisfied with defaults. So I added options via the pref pane.
@Jez, no idea. Silly question, but when you control-click, are you doing that on a file in the Finder? It probably won’t show up if you control-click a window, for example.
@Frederick, it was working for me in 10.6.8. I just updated to Lion, and haven’t tested it there yet.
I have tried to install 2.02b on my MB Air 10.6.8. When I download the zip archive I get only two files. The prefpane and a file called PathSnaggerServiceBundle.service
I guess this is not a plug In as there is no contextual menu for snagging, when I put that in the library and restart the finder.
I have tried before the 1.1. version, but got no contextual menu neither. Double clicking the new prefpane said that there is already old version which I could replace, what I did. But the plug-in itself remains version 1.1.
What I am doing wrong?
@Urs Grützner, I’d delete the old prefpane, and then put the new one in. Also, did you check your contextual menu to make sure you don’t have a submenu called “Services”? It might be in that menu. SL and Lion shove all the services in there if there are too many of them.
@jon, I have the same problem as Urs. It worked on 10.6.4 but the utility won’t work on 10.6.8 anymore.
I wish I had better news. It seems to not work for some, and I can’t quite figure out why. I will say that I am working on an update for Lion that will be an app, instead of a pref pane/service bundle. I don’t see any reason why it wouldn’t work in SL as well, so when I get that working, I’ll definitely post here. Did you try maybe deleting the preferences file and relaunching the Finder?

Hey everyone, I had some troubles installing Pathsnagger 2.0b2 too on SL 10.6.8.
Here’s what I did to fix the problem:
1. Unzip the archive.
1. Create a folder called “Services” in your “Username/Library” folder.
2. Copy the file “PathSnaggerServiceBundle.service” to that folder.
3. Doubleclick on the file “PathSnagger.prefPane” – it will install itself.
4. Relaunch the Finder.
5. It should appear now when right-clicking on a file / folder on the bottom of the contextmenu.
